Integrating EMDR and IFS in Trauma Therapy

Integrating Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapies offers a powerful and compassionate approach to healing trauma. While EMDR targets the resolution of unprocessed traumatic memories through bilateral stimulation (Shapiro, 2018), IFS provides a framework to explore and unburden the internal “parts” of the self that carry pain, fear, or protective strategies developed in response to those experiences (Schwartz & Sweezy, 2020).

Together, these modalities complement each other beautifully. IFS prepares the client by helping them access their core Self—a calm, curious inner resource—and build trusting relationships with their protective parts. This creates emotional safety and regulation before targeting traumatic memories with EMDR. Once readiness is established, EMDR can be used to process and desensitize specific memories while staying in close dialogue with the client’s parts that may arise during reprocessing.

Research shows that both IFS and EMDR are effective trauma treatments individually, but therapists are increasingly finding that using them together enhances outcomes—especially for complex trauma, dissociation, and shame-based wounds (Hodgdon et al., 2022; Shapiro, 2018). This integrative approach honors the client's pace, deepens emotional insight, and fosters lasting internal harmony.
